Pumps are more sophisticated devices.
They have a large chamber that is filled with
a drug, usually 1 to 1¬Ω ounces (30 to 50 mL).
The pump has a mechanism, driven by the
body's heat, that allows the drug to be
delivered constantly through a small catheter
inserted into a vein or artery without the need
for a stay in the hospital. It is sometimes
possible to target a specific organ such as the
liver and deliver large amounts of chemo-
therapy drugs directly to it through an artery.
To support radiation therapy , an operation
can be performed to implant catheters that are
subsequently loaded with a radioemitter.
